A persistent burden and symptom of global inequality

According to the WHO, gastrointestinal infections kill approximately 8 million people each year. While viruses are responsible for most of these infections, bacteria and parasites also significantly contribute to both acute and chronic illnesses. The impact of these diseases is particularly dramatic in developing countries, where diarrheal diseases lead to considerable morbidity and mortality, especially among children.
