CoScience Awards – Evaluation of the Copan FecalSwab device for suitability in molecular diagnostic applications

This poster by Francesco Bonometti is the second selected among the most representative studies featuring Copan products and receiving our CoScience award. The study evaluated the performance of Copan FecalSwab™ for the molecular detection of gastrointestinal pathogens across a range of transport and storage conditions. Using a panel of 13 clinically relevant enteric pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and parasites, researchers assessed nucleic acid stability and compatibility with multiple commercial molecular diagnostic assays. Results showed that FecalSwab™ maintained reliable molecular performance for up to 15 days at both refrigerated and room temperatures, as well as after three freeze-thaw cycles. No molecular interference was observed across the tested diagnostic platforms. These findings support the use of FecalSwab™ as a robust sample collection and transport device for molecular gastrointestinal testing, helping laboratories improve diagnostic reliability, workflow efficiency, and sample integrity.
